FAQ

What do I do when a shambler appears?
Cast shrivel on shambler in the same turn it appears. It only scares the creature away, it returns later, and walking away does not escape it.
Why does the game say I am carrying too many things?
You can only hold a handful of items directly. Open your satchel and put keys and spare objects inside, and the limit stops being a problem.
Can I recover from a death?
Yes. Type undo right after the game ends and you return to the move before it, so you can try a different action.

Which moments in The Bibliophile can kill you?

The game is forgiving about most things, but a few scenes are short and unforgiving. This table lists them in story order.

Scene What goes wrong What to do
Thugs at Coffey’s townhome (Chapter 5) Nothing fatal: if you are knocked out you wake in the downstairs bathroom Keep attacking with the club, mend only after being hit
Silas in the shop (Chapter 6) He attacks right after you ask about the book, and a hit knocks you out If he misses, cast shrivel on silas as your next action. If he hits, undo
The man at the well The well opens and a monster can follow Wear the mask first, cast shrivel on man, then play drum and close well
The priest’s chamber The priest can kill you on your first turn in the room Make cast shrivel on priest your very first action
The sewers (Chapter 9) A dimensional shambler teleports in at random and grabs you cast shrivel on shambler the turn it appears

How do I survive the thugs at Coffey’s townhome?

Two thugs wander the house at random, a large one and a lean one. You attack each with attack <thug> with club, and a hit usually knocks one out, although you often need several swings. Cast cast mend wound only after the text shows that something hit you. If you are knocked out, you wake in the downstairs bathroom and have to type break door over and over until it gives, then leave by the northwest exit.

The thugs do not stay down. Once both are unconscious, do not tidy up or explore. Go straight upstairs through the library west of the kitchen.

How do I survive the priest’s chamber?

The priest can finish you before you get a second action. Walk in, and before you type anything else, cast shrivel on priest. Do not use look first. If you want a safety margin, cast mend wound in the doorway before you step in. The spells guide explains why that precaution costs a turn but is worth it here.

How do I survive the shambler in the sewers?

The shambler appears at random while you walk the tunnels and sometimes while you are prying the manhole cover. Cast cast shrivel on shambler in the same turn it appears. Shrivel only scares it off, so it comes back. Two grabs kill you, and moving away does not help. Enter commands one at a time here, so a pasted list cannot run past a moment you needed to react.

Why does the game say I am carrying too many things?

You can hold only a handful of items directly. Anything beyond that goes into your satchel, but only if the satchel is open. Type open satchel early, then put your keys and flashlight inside with put <item> in satchel. In the museum you may also need to drop items you are done with before you can free a student with the letter opener.

Why is the laptop password rejected?

Type kublakhan, with a single a after the l. Some older guides spell it kublakahn, which the game refuses. See the walkthrough corrections for the other places our replay disagrees with older guides.

Can I undo a death or a bad turn?

Yes. Type undo straight after a death, and you step back one move. This is the safest way to handle random combat: if a fight goes badly, undo and try again. It also works for a wasted turn that did not kill you.

Should I name the cat?

Naming the cat is optional and only works when the cat happens to be in the room with you, because it wanders around your bookstore. Skipping it changes nothing in the route on this site.
