FAQ

Is The Bibliophile free?
Yes. The itch.io page offers the download on a name-your-own-price basis, so you can take it for free.
Which platforms does it run on?
The official page lists Windows, macOS and Linux. The game itself is a Glulx story file, which many interpreters can open.
Can I save my progress?
Yes. Like most Inform games it supports the standard save and restore commands, and undo steps back one move at a time.

Where do I get The Bibliophile?

The only place we recommend is the author’s official page on itch.io: The Bibliophile by MTW. It is listed as a downloadable game for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the price is “name your own”, so you can download it without paying.

The package we examined contains the game as a single Glulx story file (extension .gblorb), a few map images of the Mount Vernon neighborhood and the author’s own walkthrough document. This site does not host any of those files, so always get them from the official page.

How do I run it?

A story file needs an interpreter, which is a small program that reads the file and shows the text. If the download you chose does not already open on a double-click, install any interpreter that supports Glulx, such as Gargoyle or Lectrote, then open the .gblorb file with it.

When the game starts you will see the title banner and a first room called Among the Books. That is your bookstore, and you are ready to follow the full walkthrough.

Which commands do I need?

Commands are short verb phrases. These are the ones used in every chapter:

Command What it does
look (or l) Describes the room again.
x <thing> Examines something closely.
i Lists what you carry.
take <thing>, drop <thing> Picks up or puts down an object.
open, close, unlock <door> Doors, containers and locks.
search <thing> Looks through clutter, crates and shelves.
think Gives a hint about what to do or remember here.
talk to <person> then topics Starts a conversation and lists what you can ask.
ask <person> about <topic> Asks a specific question.
n, s, e, w, ne, nw, se, sw, u, d Moves in that direction.
wait Lets one turn pass.
study volume Learns the next spell from your spellbook.
cast <spell> / cast <spell> on <target> Uses a spell. See the spells guide.
undo Takes back your last move.

What should I do before chapter one?

  1. Type help once. The game itself tells first-time players to do this.
  2. Type think in the first room to see how the hint system answers.
  3. If your cat is in the room with you, you can name it. This is optional and does not affect the story.
  4. Keep your inventory tidy. The game limits how much you can carry until you open your satchel, as the survival tips explain.

Which three habits save the most time?

  • Enter one command at a time. Some chapters spring random events on you, and a long pasted list can run past the moment you needed to react.
  • Save before every fight. Combat has luck in it, and a saved game costs nothing.
  • Use undo straight after a bad result. It is the quickest way back from a death or a wasted turn.
